" I haven't been to Vermont in over thirty years. I'm really
looking forward to it. Their neighbor, New Hampshire got a
vote in their legislature on impeaching Bush. It didn't win,
but it sounds like civilization to me." With those words
producer-playwright, educator, muck-raker, Methodist, and
"radical faerie" Glenn Hopkins bade farewell the small assembly
of guests, colleagues, neighbors and well-wishers at an
impromptu farewell party at theatre headquarters here in Los
Angeles. "The little one-woman (play) MRS. ROOSEVELT is gonna be
out in Japanese next month. We got it now in Spanish, Korean,
Czech, Farsi..It's taken off with a life of its own...so my
agent says I've got to write the movie, pronto."
Unable to arrange to follow-through on last year's acceptance
as a resident of The Dorset Colony for the Arts in 2007, when
the colony emailed that there was room this spring Hopkins says
he jumped at the chance. "These art colonies are the perfect
places for writing. I've been to them in Chicago, Virginia,
Woodstock, and my wife (Korean concert pianist Christina Jeon)
and I even did one in Basin, Montana. Boy, was she in culture
shock: one street, one restaurant, cowboy boots, cowboy hats
and they really do say 'howdy'." Laughing good-naturedly and
clapping her hands, Mrs. Hopkins seems to agree.
"When we get back we'll see about producing 'Frog' again this
season."
The reference is to family musical MARK AND BARBARA FROG
produced twice already by this company. Critical reception of
this and other of Hopkins' work appears below, along with
the one-act, MRS. ROOSEVELT, available royalty-free as a
fund-raiser for progressive causes.
"And when I get back I'm going to start going around and
pitching this movie. Momma says I have to." Again Mrs. Hopkins
smiles and nods. "They say Ben Afleck and Matt Damon knocked on
every door in Hollywood. And me? I'm old and fat now...so I
don't have their advantages." And with this Hopkins laughs
heartily and then launches into an extended lament on how
Hollywood producers somehow do not see the connection between
plays and movies. "Twenty years ago I told Keanu Reeves he was
going to be a big star and I promise you...one day he'll return
one of my calls," at which Hopkins himself breaks into a big
laugh and salutes the little crowd with the gesture of a
toast.

"A familiar figure on the Los Angles theatre scene, Glenn
Hopkins has written over twenty plays melodramatic and
hilarious, brash and sensitive, frustrating yet ultimately
rewarding.Hopkins writes from the heart, exploring human
verities as well as human foibles. His integrity and purpose
shine through"
